Nadia Comaneci, (born November 12th, 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej [now OnestiGheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej [now Onesti Romania) Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast in history to get a flawless score of 10 during the Olympic event. Bela Karalyi discovered Comaneci when she was six. Comaneci would go on to become Romania's gymnastics coach. First competing in the championships for juniors from Romania in 1969, she was 13th. In 1970, she the Romanian gymnast won. The first time she competed in an international competition, which was an Olympic-style junior preolympic competition for countries in the Communist bloc, she was awarded three gold medals. Then in 1973 and 1975 she was named the all-around Junior Champion. At her first competitive event at the senior level, Lyudmila Turkishcheva from Russia took home five gold medals as well as one silver. In 1976, she was the first female athlete in the world to utilize a reversed double salto for a dismount off the parallel bars.
